US authorities believe that a South African mining company, a diamond dealer/scam artist named Dennis Van Kerrebroeck and a giant 68-carat diamond all played a role in a recent gem theft in New York, Gothamist reported.
According the report, which quoted Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Todd Hyman, the diamond made its way into the New York City last September, via Van Kerrebroeck, who agreed to sell it to a Fifth Avenue jeweler. The final price, however, was only one third of the diamond's $3.3 million's true worth.
The under-sale made the FBI suspect the stone was stolen, and they proceeded to confiscate it from Taly Diamond, last Thursday.
The dealer allegedly stole the diamond by arranging for it to be released from customs without telling the company that owned it. Still, Taly Diamond insists the $1 million sale was legitimate, and announced it would fight to get the diamond back.
