Vietnam's import turnover from the United States in the first two months of this year reached 465.3 million U.S. dollars, a climb of 66.44 percent year-on-year, said the information center of Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade on Wednesday.

Last month, Vietnam spent 199.3 million U.S. dollars from purchasing goods from the U.S. market, down 27.13 percent from a month earlier, said the center.

Machines, components and spare parts topped the Vietnam's import items from the U.S. market in the first two months of 2010. Vietnam's import turnover of this commodity reached roughly 95 million U.S. dollars, a surge of 10.67 percent over the same period last year.

Animal feed ranked second with import value of 69.1 million U.S. dollars during this period, followed by cotton with turnover standing at 23.96 million U.S. dollars, said the center.

In January-February period, Vietnam witnessed a year-on-year increase in turnover of most import items from the United States including plastic materials, wood products, electronics, chemicals, rubbers and wheat.

However, a year-on-year decrease in value was seen in some U.S. products such as pharmaceuticals, cloth, fertilizer and pesticide, said the center.

Last year, Vietnam paid 2.8 billion U.S. dollars for buying goods from the United States, up 9.1 percent year-on-year, according to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam.
