On April 3, the 10th session of China-Indonesia Joint Committee on Economy and Trade was held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming and Indonesian Trade Minister Mari Pangestu co-chaired the session.

The two ministers said that since the 9th session, the two countries had achieved many goals in many economic and trade fields, such as trade, investment, infrastructure and tourism. In spite of the financial crisis, Indonesia's export to China changed slightly in 2009, while China's direct investment in Indonesia rose by 29 percent, their cooperation in infrastructure reached remarkable achievement, and the number of visitors to the two countries reached 770,000. The two parties agreed to consolidate and enhance their strategic partnership, push the bilateral trade and economic cooperation to higher level and wider scope on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of China-Indonesia diplomatic ties.

According to Chen, China will constantly promote the balanced development of the bilateral trade and provide conveniences for Indonesian products exported to China. Meanwhile, he hoped that under the framework of the joint committee, the two countries would make full use of the bilateral investment promotion committee to expand their investment cooperation and further expand China's investment in Indonesia. China will also provide financing support to Indonesia to strengthen their cooperation in the infrastructure, covering communication and power, and expect Indonesia could provide supports and conveniences for Chinese enterprises.

Chen said that China-ASEAN FTA was mutual-beneficial and had been showing as a strong momentum to improve trade between China and Indonesia since it went into operation. China-ASEAN FTA, with a huge population of 1.9 billion, will lift the attractiveness of ASEAN for overseas investment, and bring long-term benefits for both China and ASEAN. So the two parties should be more confident to consolidate and push forward the construction of China-ASEAN FTA, realize the target of mutual-benefits and win-win outcomes. Chen added that China was willing to join its hands with ASEAN countries in supporting organizations and relevant enterprises to deepen the industrial cooperation, take advantage of the opportunity and improve international competitiveness so as to gain the larger space for development.

Mari Pangestu said that Indonesia was willing to deepen bilateral trade and economic cooperation with China, push their trade scale to a higher level, constantly expand their mutual investment, and enhance their industrial cooperation in many sectors, such as manufacture. Indonesia welcomes Chinese enterprises to invest in the country and participate in the infrastructure construction of the country. Meanwhile, Indonesia will provide conveniences for Chinese enterprises. She also said that the FTA was an important basis for Indonesia and China to expand their trade and economic cooperation. Indonesia appreciates China's positive position to bring the win-win cooperation for the two sides and would join in the efforts of China to make the FTA run smoothly.

Additionally, the two parties exchanged their views on many concrete trade and economic affairs, such as Chinese enterprises’ participation in Indonesia's 10 million MW power station program, the implementation of the export of China’s Modern Ark 60 planes to Indonesia, product quality and safety certification and its attending the Shanghai World Expo.

After the session, the two ministers inked a Conference Summary on Further Enhancing the Trade Investment and Cooperation of China and Indonesia, and jointly held a press conference. In the summary, the two parties reiterated that they had the determination in fully implementing the China-Indonesia Free Trade Agreement; they would cooperate in the fields of infrastructure construction, financing, construction, mutual investment, industrial organization cooperation and trade data exchange and analysis, under the framework of bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

Chinese representatives present at the session were from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China, People’s Government of Guangdong Province, National Development Bank, the Export-Import Bank of China, China Export & Credit Insurance Corporation, China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products, China Chamber of Commerce of Metals Minerals & Chemicals Imports & Exports, China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Textiles, China Chamber Of Commerce for I/E of Light Industrial Products & Arts-Crafts and some large-scaled enterprises. And Indonesian representatives present at the session were from Indonesian financing organizations, chambers of commerce and government departments, including the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Indonesia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Transportation, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of State for National Development and Planning.
