Surat’s diamond manufacturers are looking at direct imports of rough diamonds from Canada to ensure reasonable prices and better availability, according to Rohit Mehta, President of the Surat Diamond Association, reports PolishedPrices.
“Canada is one the world’s largest rough diamond producing countries and we are keen to have some tie-up with mining companies there which will allow us direct imports of roughs,” explains Mehta, who says that the Association will send a delegation to Canada in an effort reach agreements for direct import. Mehta explains that the delegation plans to meet companies that have small mining operations, reports PolishedPrices.
"Currently, we are facing problems in sourcing of smaller rough stones. Prices of rough diamonds smaller than a carat have risen considerably in the last few months. However, the prices of polished diamonds have not risen in tandem,” continues Mehta. The rise in prices of rough diamonds has led to reduced margins for diamond manufacturers.
