U.S. Polished Diamond Imports Up 86% in Value in March 2010

Polished diamond imports to the United States’ increased both in value and volume terms in March 2010, reports Diamond World. There was an 86% increase in terms of value of polished imports to $1.55 billion, as compared to the same month last year; and a 63% increase in volume of polished diamond imports to 1.212 million carats, with average prices increasing 14% to $1,281.98 per carat.
Polished diamonds exports from the United States increased 68% to
$1.22 billion in terms of value. Net polished imports (excess of imports over exports) increased threefold from the same period last year to $336 million.
Import of rough diamonds to the United States increased 137% to $45 million in March 2010, while exports of rough rose by 82% to $20 million, continues Diamond World.
