Jonathan Samkange, a lawyer for London-based African Consolidated Resources, which has been challenging the Zimbabwe government over the exploration rights at the controversial Marange diamond field, was arrested Monday.

According to Voice of America, Samkange was summoned to a hearing in connection with an affidavit he filed in 2006 on behalf of ACR. Judicial authorities allege that Samkange lied in the affidavit.

Samkange was 10 minutes late to the hearing and was promptly arrested upon arrival on charges of contempt of court.

A police spokesman refused to comment on the matter saying it was still pending in court.
