Prominent Swedish auction house Bukowskis was the victim of an armed robbery just days before its spring auction viewing, Stockholm News reported.
According to the police, three masked men with automatic weapons burst into the Bukowskis showroom in Stockholm Thursday, and got away with $1.5 million worth of jewelry meant for its classic jewelry spring auction, set for June 1.
Stockholm Police spokeswoman Christina Johansson said the thieves entered the auction house in broad daylight, collected some 300 pieces of jewelry and fled in a car, which was found later in the center of the city.
No injuries were reported during the robbery, but several witnesses had to be treated for shock. The Stockholm Police are seeking witnesses who may have seen the robbers when they fled the store.
Bukowskis, which is considered the Nordic region’s oldest and largest auction house, is insured by Lloyd's of London, which insures many of Europe's largest auction houses.
“This is very unfortunate for Bukowskis, but the main thing is that all employees and visitors are unharmed,” Bukowskis spokeswoman Charlotte Raasbrant-Bergstroem said. “We now have a police investigation going on down here and also have crisis management for our employees. All focus is on them.”
