With the construction of Akshardham Metro Station built near Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple, New Delhi using world famous Dholpur sandstone, the undisputed utility and charming beauty of the material has again been brought into focus.
The newely built Metro Station was inaugurated on November 12, 2009 by Minister for Urban Development, Jaipal Reddy, in the presence of the Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit.
The Akshardham Metro Station, named aptly for its proximity to Akshardham Temple, is the tallest metro station built so far with six levels, which rise to 16.5 m above ground and go 21 m underground. Its design and well conceived idea of using sandstone complement quite well the Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple, which is a marvel in stone architecture displaying amazing application of sandstone.
The large scale use of sandstone in building metro station is quite innovative in modern architecture, though several historical structures like Red Fort in Delhi as well as in Agra are the living testimony of its massive use in important constructions. The easy availability, workability and lasting beauty of sandstone has retained its liking among modern architects.
