Chad Davis, a Florida jeweler how claimed he had lost $3 million worth of diamonds during a mall visit in 2007, was found dead in Orlando last week, from what authorities believe was a drug overdose, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
According to initial reports, Davis (38) overdosed on medication. EMTs rushed him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead the following day.
Davis was involved in a several-year legal battle with Rosy Blue, a Belgium-based diamond distributor who supplied him with the gems he later claimed to have lost. Rosy Blue contends that Davis concocted the mall story as a scam. The company puts the value of the missing diamonds at about $4 million.
Rosy Blue obtained a $6 million judgment in Orlando federal court against Davis and his company, Davis & Associates. Davis said he wasn't able to pay the judgment because of the weak economy and a lack of insurance to cover the lost gems.
As lawyers continued to fight over the millions, Davis filed for bankruptcy.
Rosy Blue attorney Mark Osherow of Fort Lauderdale said he learned of Davis' death when the Sentinel called Tuesday for his comment. He said he couldn't speculate on what Davis' death meant for the litigation, adding that "We'll have to evaluate the situation further."
