In the first half of this year, diamond trade volume at the Shanghai Diamond Exchange reached $1.22 billion, up 76 percent from the same period of last year, Shanghai Diamond Exchange said Tuesday.

China's diamond imports of general trade increased by 92 percent year on year to a record high of $577 million, far more than Japan's $334 million. China is number two in diamond consumption after the US.
