In this thesis, experimental investigations have been done on temperature and energy partition and wheel wear in grinding with a vitrified CBN wheel. The main results are as follows: (1) Grinding temperatures were measured and analysed in surface grinding using thermocouple techniques . The experimental results indicated that low temperature rise obtained in the surface of the workpiece, this was attributed to the very high thermal conductivity of the CBN abrasive grains. (2) The grinding ratio was 191.63 to 237.27 for grinding HSS and the grinding ratio was 150.78 to 279.39 for grinding granite. The CBN abrasive grains were flattened for grinding granite, while broken and pull-out for grinding HSS. (3) Experimental investigations of the specific energy with a vitrified CBN wheel were conducted. It is found that the specific energy for dry grinding of HSS was 4.45 J/mm3 to 14.57 J/mm3, and 5.51 J/mm3 to 13.66 J/mm3 for wet grinding. The specific energy for dry grinding of stainless steel was 7.15 J/mm3 to 23.11 J/mm3, and 7.74 J/mm3 to 22.4 J/mm3 for wet grinding. The specific energy for dry grinding of granite was 5.27 J/mm3 to 28.13 J/mm3, and 5.74 J/mm3 to 27.53 J/mm3 for wet grinding. (4) The energy partition to the workpiece was estimated using a temperature matching method.Energy partition to the HSS was 57%~75% for dry grinding and 23.8%~32% for wet grinding. Energy partition to the stainless steel was 41%~63% for dry grinding and 10.5%~14.1% for wet grinding. Energy partition to the granite was 14%~21% for dry grinding and 4.5%~9% for wet grinding.
