The Midlands Minerals Corporation has announced that a report on the Itilima Diamond project in Shinyanga, Tanzania, shows "high potential" for additional diamondiferous kimberlites, MarketWatch reported.
The Itilima property is located 25 kilometers south of one of the diamond industry's key mines, the Williamson mine at Mwadui, which has been producing diamonds steadily since 1940. The mine's total production to date stands at over 17 million carats and includes some rare colored diamonds.
In 2004, two kimberlite pipes drilled and sampled at Itilima produced micro-diamonds. Mineral investigation has also indicated a high presence of kimberlite indicator minerals, such as garnets, at the location.
Midlands Minerals President and CEO Kim Harris said that the company was "pleased" to learn of the diamond-bearing potential of the Itilima project. "We are particularly pleased to see 10 kimberlite targets upgraded to Priority -1 status," Harris stated, adding that the company was looking into strategies for moving ahead at the Itilima site.
