South Africa's Hawks special police unit has handed the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) a docket on diamonds model Naomi Campbell allegedly received from representatives of former Liberian president Charles Taylor, who is currently on trial for war crimes.
The Times Online quoted NPA spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga as confirming that the docket had been submitted, but did not provide details as to its contents. The NPA will review the material and decide whether or not to prosecute Campbell, who has maintained that when she was given the diamonds, she had never heard the term "conflict diamond" or of Taylor.
The issue of conflict diamonds is a highly-charged one for both human rights activists and the diamond industry.
In other news pertaining to Taylor's trial at The Hague, former president Thabo Mbeki's office announced last week that he did not plan to meet with Taylor's lawyer, Courtenay Griffiths. Griffiths has said he wishes to meet with Mbeki to discuss the circumstances of Taylor's resignation.
In addition, Griffiths is reportedly interested in learning about any arms deals Taylor might have conducted while serving as president.
