India's Polished Diamond Exports Up 65.2% in August

India exported $2.3 billion worth of polished diamonds in August 2010, an increase of 65.2%, according to data published by the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council.
Net exports totaled 4 million carats, $941 million, with a per carat value of $235.25, a significant increase over the corresponding month last year, when the country's net polished exports stood at 1.79 million carats, or $484.5 million.
August imports, meanwhile, comprised 10 million carats of polished diamonds, at a value of $1.36 billion, and 8.03 million carats of rough diamonds with a value of $689.7 million – an increase of 21.6% in volume and 52.9% in value.
Thus far in the 2010 fiscal year, India's rough diamond imports stand at $4.74 billion and total 66.7 million carats, a 46.7% increase in value compared to the corresponding period last year.
