American actress Kim Basinger will narrate a documentary on the Hope Diamond for the Smithsonian Channel, NPR News reports.
The documentary, titled Mystery of the Hope Diamond, is being produced to coincide with the 50th anniversary of jeweler Harry Winston donating the diamond to the museum and is scheduled to premiere on November 21, 2010.
The Hope Diamond, a 45.52-carat stone with a color grade of Fancy Dark Grayish Blue, is one of the most famous colored diamonds and is considered one of the most valuable jewels in the world. It was originally mined in India in the 17th century and known as the Tavernier Blue. King Louis XIV bought it and it remained part of the French crown jewels until the Revolution, when it disappeared.
The diamond eventually resurfaced and passed through many hands, until diamond jeweler Pierre Cartier offered it Evalyn Walsh McLean in 1910. McLean reportedly found the diamond much more enticing after Cartier reset it in a then-modern style and told her about the stone's legendary curse.
