Police in Chennai, India, last week arrested a Sri Lankan man who was found to have over 2,000 pieces of diamonds and other gemstones in his stomach, the Times of India reports.
Chennai Suburban Police Commissioner S. R. Jangid told press that he had been tipped off about the man, who was arriving on an Air India flight from Colombo.
The Sri Lankan diamond smuggler was identified as Mohamed Rafi, who managed to clear customs and immigration after landing in Chennai. When police spotted him, they searched his bags, which came up empty. Rafi maintained that he was innocent, but the police noticed that he was uncomfortable when sitting and took him to a hospital to be examined.
At the hospital, it was verified that Rafi had stored the diamonds and other gemstones in 42 condoms and swallowed them. He was fed laxatives and bananas, and the stones were recovered after some six hours.
Police were planning to hand him over to customs officials.
