India's Income Tax Department raided some of Surat's leading diamond companies last week, the Indian Express reported.
According to the newspaper's website the Income Tax department seized a number of documents from the JB Diamonds firm, which had been reported to the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) as a defaulter.
The department's investigative wing also raided the manufacturing units of the Sahil Gems and Asian Star diamond companies, as well as their factories and managers' residences. In addition to the documents, which the department was in the process of verifying, the investigators also seized stocks of rough diamonds and polished diamonds.
