A subsidiary of the Indian diamond company Shrenuj and Company Group is poised to open the first diamond jewelry manufacturing plant in Botswana, news outlets report.
Shrenuj Botswana General Manager Kim Lanny told Business Week that the jewelry factory would open later in November. According to Lanny, the plant would begin making jewelry for the US market and would then branch out to southern Africa.
"Shrenuj Botswana was the last company to start working in Botswana. However, it has become the first to expand through the diamond pipeline (diamond manufacturing to fully-made jewelry)," Lanny said, adding that the accomplished showed the firm's "commitment to Botswana."
Shrenuj and Company Group Chairman Shreyas Doshi recently told shareholders that diamond manufacturing operations in Botswana had reached the "desired output" and that Shrenuj would be hiring more workers, increasing its number of employees to some 300.
In addition to launching a diamond jewelry manufacturing operation, the company also plans to open a small retail jewelry business.
