Bread for All, an international development organization backed by Switzerland's Protestant churches, is urging the Swiss government to exclude trade in diamonds from Zimbabwe's controversial diamond fields.
According to a report on ekklesia.co.uk, Bread for All is arguing that that definition of "blood diamonds" should include not only rough diamonds that are traded illicitly for the benefit of rebel forces, but also diamonds sourced from areas "where human rights violations are committed by government forces."
The Zimbabwe Advocacy Office, a partner of Bread for All, reports ongoing human rights violations in Zimbabwe's Chiadzwa and Marange diamond fields.
Diamonds from Marange and Chiadzwa are currently under international embargo until the Kimberley Process is satisfied that Zimbabwe has complied with all KP demands. Zimbabwe's Minister of Mines, Obert Mpofu, has recently made several public declarations arguing that Zimbabwe has complied with the KP and demanding that the country be allowed to export its diamonds immediately and without preconditions.
