US Polished Diamond Imports Up 42% in October

US polished diamond imports rose 42% in October 2010, reaching $1.9 billion. Polished exports were also up, totaling $1.25 billion, a 36% increase. Net polished imports totaled $655 million, 56% higher than the corresponding month of 2009.
The US imported $57 million worth of rough diamonds, a 58% increase, and exported a total of $55 million of rough stones – 111% more than October 2009. Net rough imports stood at $2 million, considerably less than the $10 million worth of rough diamonds the US imported in October 2009.
The US's net diamond account for October 2010 totaled $657 million, an increase of 53% over October 2009.
From January to October 2010, US polished imports totaled $15.2 billion, a year-on-year increase of 51%. Polished diamond exports for the period comprised $11.5 billion, an increase of 47%, while rough imports were up to $407 million – 79% more than in the corresponding period of 2009.
US rough exports for the first 10 months of the year stood at $261 million, a 60% increase over last year. The country's net diamond account for January-October 2010 stood at $3.8 billion, a 67% increase over 2009.
