The UN Security Council Panel of Experts on Liberia has found that while Liberia has made progress in stopping trade in conflict diamonds, more work remained to be done and the country's progress on the issue was "slow," UPI reports.
Liberia's former president, Charles Taylor, is currently on trial for war crimes charges for allegedly using his country's rough diamonds to fund civil conflict in neighboring Sierra Leone.
According to Canadian official Donna Pottie, who addressed the plenary meeting of the Kimberley Process in Jerusalem in November 2010, obstacles to full enforcement of the KP Certification Scheme in Liberia, as well as other West African nations, include porous borders, limited Kimberley Process-related expertise, insufficient capacity and resources, as well as poor regional cooperation.
