A gold, platinum and diamond ring designed by Karl Williams of New Zealand has captured first place in the Gemological Institute of America's annual George A. Schuetz Jewelry Design Contest. Williams' ring features a segmented gold and platinum band set with a 1.5-carat diamond complemented by eight 0.25-carat diamonds.
A Hong Kong designer, Clarrie Yap, won second place for her "urban landscape" ring design, and the third-place prize was awarded to a white gold and onyx pendant designed by Elena Lorenzi of Italy.
Contestants in the jewelry design contest were asked for one design that had not been shown or put up for sale prior to the competition.
