Britain's Prince William and his bride-to-be Kate Middleton, due to wed on April 29 at Westminster Abbey, are reportedly considering asking wedding guests to donate to the couple's favorite charities in lieu of giving expensive gifts.
Royal weddings generally prompt over-the-top presents, as world leaders vie to outdo each other and rain gold and diamond baubles down on the couple. Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana received thousands of presents from all over the world, and the reigning Queen and Duke of Edinburgh received over 2,500 presents.
A spokesman for William's office said that the couple was still weighing their options and no final decisions regarding donations vs. diamonds had yet been taken. However, the Telegraph quoted a royal aide saying that the wedding invitations would include instructions on how to donate to charity in the couple's name.
In recent weeks, reports have circulated that some Saudis intended to procure the Rainbow Collection – the world's largest collection of fancy colored diamonds (consisting of 301 diamonds and worth some $120 million) from gem collector Eddy Elzas and give it to William and Kate on the occasion of their royal nuptials.
