Two Diamond District jewelers, Atul Shah and Mahaveer Kankariya, are to be tried for allegedly organizing a diamond heist reminiscent of the 2001 film Snatch, Diamond Price Guide reports.
Shah and Kankariya are accused of hiring men to "rob" their stores at gunpoint, dressed as Hassidic Jews. However, security camera footage recovered by the police showed the jewelers emptying their safes of diamonds and gemstones before the staged robbery took place.
The two allegedly tried to destroy the cameras using heavy-duty cleaning fluid, but the system's tapes were undamaged and prosecutors say they show Shah and Kanakariya replacing the jewels with empty boxes, which could then be "stolen" by the hired gunmen.
The suspects' lawyers counter that the jewelry and diamonds have not been found and the gunmen were not arrested, but the Lloyds of London insurance company says that the two gave false information about the robbery when they were interviewed.
Shah and Kankariya are charged with grand larceny and insurance fraud and could face 25 years in prison if convicted.
