Botswana is the "best diamond address in the world," but Botswana Diamonds also plans to examine diamond exploration opportunities in Zimbabwe and Cameroon, says company chairman John Teeling.
Teeling said that Botswana Diamonds held three exploration licenses in Botswana and was looking into options for bulk sampling at AK8 and AK9 and drilling at BK5, all of which are known to contain diamondiferous kimberlites.
Moreover, the company sees "excellent potential" in license PL7/2004 in Botswana's Orapa region, and planned to conduct a sampling and drilling program there this year.
Zimbabwe is opening itself up to diamond exploration by foreigners. In late January, a government delegation to Angola – which produced $1.17 billion of diamonds in 2009 –cited "good friendship ties" between the two nations and said that the Zimbabwe government might grant Angolan companies exploration licenses.
Cameroon is not yet diamond producer, but it contains diamond resources. In December 2010, the South Korean C&K Mining Company was granted a development license for the Mobilong diamond mine in the southeast of the country.
