The Netherlands' Queen Beatrix has extended the "Royal" title of the Royal Asscher Diamond Company for another 25 years as an acknowledgement of the firm's "leading role in the diamond industry, the Asscher family announced Wednesday.
Amsterdam's Deputy Mayor Lodewijk Asscher officially confirmed the title at the company's Amsterdam headquarters.
The Royal Asscher Diamond Company was founded in 1854 by Joseph Isaac Asscher and is to date the only diamond company in the world to bear the Royal title, originally granted by Queen Juliana in 1980.
Asscher family diamantaires have been responsible for cutting some of the world's most legendary stones, including the Excelsior Diamond and the Cullinan Diamond, and invented the Asscher and Royal Asscher diamond cuts – both modified square shapes with cropped corners.
To honor its extended Royal title, the diamond company plans to release a limited-edition Stars of Africa ring on the date of Queen Juliana's birthday, set with orange diamonds – orange being the Netherlands' national color.
