The Sun Drop 110-carat yellow diamond is currently on display at London's Natural History Museum, having been loaned by the Cora International diamond company.
Alan Hart, the museum's minerals curator, told the BBC that he had never seen a diamond like the Sun Drop, which is the largest Vivid Yellow pear-shaped diamond known to exist and is approximately the size of a woman's thumb. "You can see how exceptional this diamond is," he stressed.
Suzette Gomes, CEO of Cora International, offered some insights into the diamond's shape. Colored diamonds present different challenges for cutting, since their color has to be concentrated rather than reflected back out.
Diamonds with weaker colors would be cut in square shapes, Gomes explained. Whereas the pear cut was appropriate for diamonds with strongly saturated hues, such as that of the Sun Drop.
Both Gomes and Hart declined to comment on the diamond's value.
