Surat's 500,000 diamond polishers will soon be issued unique identification codes by the Surat Diamond Association (SDA), which also plans to offer them insurance benefits, Indian news outlets report.
SDA teams are expected to visit areas of Surat that contain clusters of diamond polishing businesses and distribute forms to each worker. Registered diamond workers will receive insurance benefits of 100,000 rupees, and families of workers who die on the job will be eligible to receive 150,000 rupees in benefits.
All of the workers' personal information, as well as their photos, will be uploaded to a database on the SDA website, which is expected to serve a dual purpose – helping skilled workers find jobs in the diamond trade, and blacklisting workers who have been involved in theft or other illegal activities.
According to SDA Presdient Dinesh Navadia, the association also intends to fund scholarships for children of diamond polishers and share in major medical expenses not covered by the insurance.
"We want to make the industry organized," Navadia said, pointing out that the SDA would cover both technical and non-technical employees of the local diamond sector.
