An antique diamond brooch that was once part of the French Crown Jewels is one of the most important lots in the jewel collection of Alice Appleton Hay, which scheduled to be auctioned Wednesday at Doyle New York.
The diamond jewel was first sold in the Louvre in 1887 after the fall of Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie. Tiffany & Co bought nearly a third of the lots at that sale, including the brooch.
The piece comes in a historic Tiffany box along with a card inscribed by American banking giant J. Pierpont Morgan and is expected to sell for $50,000 to $70,000.
Other pieces in the Hay Collection, which has never been put up for sale, include jewelry by the venerable diamond houses Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Chaumet.
