The Diavik Diamond Mine in Canada produced 1.35 million carats in the first quarter of 2011, according to a report on the activities of the mine – the most prolific in North America – released this week by 40% stakeholder Harry Winston.
While both the quantity of diamonds recovered and the amount of ore processed were lower in Q1 2011 than in Q4 2010, due to maintenance work at the processing plant, the company reports that the Diavik operation is thus far on target to hit the annual production goal of 6.9 million carats of diamonds out of 2 million tons of processed ore.
Harry Winston held two sales of rough diamonds from Diavik in Q1. Based on these sales and the current diamond recovery profile, the company has released a rough price model for the different types of ore. Diamonds from A-154 South realized an average per-carat price of $140 in March 2011 and $160 in April 2011, while diamond from A-154 North sold for an average $180/carat in march and $205 in April.
Diamonds from A-418 A Type Ore sold for $130/carat in March and $150/carat in April, while diamonds from the lower-grade A-418 B Type Ore sold for $90/carat in March and $105/carat in April.
