The Liberia Diamond and Gold Dealers Association (LDDA) has lent its hands to anti-diamond smuggling efforts by donating two motorbikes to the Ministry of Lands, Mines, and Energy, according to a report on the AllAfrica.com news site.
LDDA Vice President for Operations Asaka B. Konneh told All Africa that the motorbikes would be used by mining inspectors and mining operations agents working in the Mano River Kongo area, where diamond smuggling is reportedly rife.
Konneh called diamond smuggling from Liberia into neighboring Sierra Leone "a serious business" and said that the LDDA had seen fit to take part in combating the phenomenon, which could have adverse effects on the country's economy.
The Kimberley Process has repeatedly cited lack of resources as one of the main obstacles to stopping illicit diamond trade in Liberia and other diamond producing nations in western Africa.
