Malaysian police are investigating the theft Friday of over $1 million worth of diamonds from a jeweler's booth at a Kuala Lumpur gemstone and jewelry show, news outlets report.
According to the district police chief, officials from the Habib jewelry company reported that a group of four or five foreigners approached the booth at 22:30 on Friday as staff were closing up for the night. They told police that some of the group members "distracted" the employees, while an accomplice slipped into the back and made away with a bag of diamond jewelry.
A Habib spokeswoman spoke to a local Star newspaper, saying that the heist was "smooth and very organized" and added that the theft had been so quick that company staff noticed the jewelry had been taken only after the thieves were gone.
