The Kimberly Process will visit Zimbabwe again next week to investigate claims of diamond smuggling and related violence, the Herald said, citing an unidentified government official, Bloomberg reported.
A team will visit Zimbabwe’s diamond producing mines in Murowa, River Ranch and the Chiadzwa Diamond Fields, also known as Marange, the Harare-based newspaper said on its website.
There are “suspicions and allegations’’ that Zimbabwe’s security forces killed scores of illegal miners in Chiadzwa, the Herald said. The Chiadzwa diamond fields contain the “largest concentrated reserves in the world,’’ it added.
Zimbabwe produced about 695,000 carats of diamonds worth $31 million in 2007, according to Kimberley Process.
