The US has expressed disappointment that the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme has decided – albeit not by consensus, as required by KP policy – to allow Zimbabwe to export rough diamonds from the Marange region and is seeking to block sales of Zimbabwe's diamonds until the issue is resolved.
The Bulawayo24.com news website quoted US State Department Spokesperson Victoria Nuland saying that the US believed that work toward a solution to the issue of Zimbabwe's diamond exports must continue, and that until a consensus was reached no diamonds should be exported from Marange.
"The Kinshasa Intersessional did not reach a consensus text," Nuland stressed.
"The United States has been a strong supporters of the Kimberley Process in the past and desires to find a way forward for the [KP] that includes Zimbabwe and preserves the credibility of the process," read a statement issued by the US embassy in Harare.
