Britain's Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, visited the "diamond capital" of Canada on Tuesday and came away with gifts of jewelry crafted from Canadian diamonds, courtesy of Harry Winston.
The prince received a pair of cufflinks set with 390 pave diamonds in a platinum setting, while the duchess was presented with a brooch featuring fewer (302) but bigger stones. Both jewels are shaped like a polar bear, the emblem of the Northwest Territories.
Harry Winston CEO Robert Gannicott said that the diamond jewelry designed for William and Kate was intended to represent the local culture. The company's craftsmen refrained from using large diamonds, opting instead for an "intricate design that reflects the sort of design you see in the beadwork and the craftsmanship in the Northwest Territories."
A total of 250 man hours went into creating the duke and duchess' bear-themed jewelry.
