Granite is a hard coarse grained igneous rock formed millions of years ago on the surface of the earth. It is basically composed of three minerals - feldspar, Quartz and Mica. Due to the difference in the proportion of these three minerals in the rock formation, the color, texture and patterns in most granite slab varies. After we have discovered the uses of granite, most of the material is extracted through mining in quarries. After extraction most of the rock is broken into large and small pieces and sent off to the various granite distributors spread across the world. Most of the large pieces are used in whole as slabs while the smaller pieces are cut into tiles.
Granite is very useful in homes where it can be used in kitchens, bathroom and other rooms as tiles, worktops etc. It is also a very good material for offices, institutions, hospitals etc. Whether used as an external or an internal interface, granite is very durable and easy maintenance material which is of natural sources. Granite tiles are very widely used as flooring, walls, decorative sections etc while long slabs of granite are used as counter tops or worktops. Worktops made in granite provide a cost effective, practical yet durable working surface and hence are very popular in any part of the world. Many people also opt for granite as it's a natural material unlike man made surfaces. Also, it comes in different colors so that you can choose to synchronize the color scheme with your interior designs. The most common colors which are used in the kitchen worktops are darker colors while the tile will be preferably of lighter colors. It's ultimately the decision of the customer to choose the right design and color. The only point that needs to be taken care of is that granite is very heavy and whether it's used as tiles or worktops, the underlying structure should be reinforced to take its weight. You can check the structure of the building yourself or through professional surveyor before starting work, this is especially advised if your building has been standing for quite some time.
The main advantages of using granite as the working material in our homes or commercial establishments are:
Cost effective over the long term due to low maintenance costs Wide ranges of color, pattern and texture to choose from Heat resistant, hence the ideal material especially for kitchen worktop Durable and hard wearing Moisture resistant, hence suitable for bathrooms etc Scratch proof as the surface remains as smooth as initially Stain resistant, can be used in kitchen where there is possibility of spills and stains Easy to clean (normally using a damp cloth) Mold and mildew resistant, unlike the materials like wood which are spoiled because of the onset of mold.
Before finalizing on granite worktops as the suitable material for your home or office, you should first gather as much information about it as possible so that you know that you have made the right decision!
