Three bomb blasts exploded in Mumbai on Wednesday around 7 p.m., killing at least 17 people and wounding some 140, according to officials. India's Home Ministry confirmed that the bombs were terrorist attacks. The explosions went off during rush hour in a taxi in Dadar, in the Zaveri Bazaar jewelry market and in the Opera House business district.
Police said the attackers used improvised explosive devices hidden in an umbrella to bomb the diamond market and the Opera House. The chief minister of Maharashtra has promised to compensate the family members of the deceased and those who were injured, according to the Hindustan Times.
"Words cannot properly express our shock and dismay over these cruel and senseless attacks, whose sole aim is to wreak havoc and cause suffering in a city that is so important, first and foremost because it is home to so many friends and family. Our hearts go out to the all the victims, the injured and their families," said Moshe Mosbacher, President of the Diamond Dealers Club, lamenting the attacks. Mosbacher pledged to continue to do business as usual in India and not to let terrorists get the upper hand.
