A federal indictment was filed against two Florida residents, charging them with conspiracy to commit the crime of interstate transportation of stolen property and interstate transportation of stolen property. Three other defendants were charged as well.
The five suspects allegedly stole diamonds from jewelry stores across the United States – specifically Oregon, California, Tennessee and Nevada -- and then sold them in Pennsylvania. The suspects are accused of conducting surveillance of the stores they planned to rob and of assigning different roles to the different members of the ring.
The group allegedly carried out seven diamond thefts in Oregon between December 2010 and January 2011. The stolen diamonds were valued at over $1.4 million.
The thieves were caught in a joint investigation by the Portland Police Bureau and the FBI, and the investigation is ongoing.
