A new report has said that New York City's Diamond District was in need of cosmetic improvements, as well as a way to attract new workers to diamond companies. It suggested that the zone along 47th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues market itself as a tourist attraction, according to an article in The Wall Street Journal.
The report was prepared by the Pratt Center for Community Development together with the Empire State Development Corporation on behalf of the 47th Street Business Improvement District.
Aside from cleaning off building facades, the report advised that sidewalks should be replaced with a shinier, glittery material and that a streetscape of some sort be devised to draw in tourists. A promotional campaign was suggested as well.
To create industry longevity, the report mentioned the option of local schools partnering with the Business Improvement District to create training programs and internship opportunities. More than 4,100 companies operate in the Diamond District, employing more than 22,000 workers.
