Venus Jewel, one of the leading solitaire diamond manufacturers, announced today it has added a new parameter to its renowned Venus Grading System (VGS).
The new parameter called a ‘Spread / Weight ratio’ is meant to serve as a precise indicator for whether, for a given diameter, a diamond is carrying more or less weight than it ideally should, which in turn will affect its price.
It is actually the most significant of the ‘cut’ parameters as with the spread ratio alone one can easily judge how well a diamond has been cut,” Venus said in a statement.
Generally, diamond buying is based on the size of the stone. The new parameter refers to a diamond’s ‘face up’ size compared to its weight, it said.
For now the parameter only applies to round shaped diamonds, but the Indian company said it is conducting research for other shapes.
"Our ongoing innovative approach to business has helped us to consider ‘spread ratio (weight ratio)’ as an important parameter, and our quest for transparent business practices has resulted in us disclosing this in our Venus Grading Report (VGR)," Anil Shah, partner of Venus Jewel said.
"It certainly affects the appearance of the diamond based on its diameter and weight, and hence should affect its pricing. Along with Spread ratio, if we as an industry can develop a mechanism to evaluate the ‘fire of a diamond’ then I strongly believe that these two parameters together could revolutionize the definition of 4C’s," Mr Shah said.
