Over 100 investigators from India's income tax authority on Monday raided a number of properties belonging to multi-billion dollar diamond trader Mahendra Brothers Exports, the Mumbai Mirror reports.
Sources told the newspaper that the authorities sealed 25 lockers at the diamond company's Opera House office and its Andheri diamond manufacturing plant, as well as four of its diamond processing units.
Mahendra Brothers, which exports cut and polished diamonds, has been a Diamond Trading Company sightholder since 1969. A diamond industry source quoted by the Mirror called the firm "one of the biggest diamond trading companies in the world" and said that it generally maintains a low profile.
An unnamed official from the income tax authority told the paper that the raids were conducted after the tax office received "specific information" and would continue.
The Mirror was unable to reach any of the Mahendra Brothers partners for comment.
