Global alumina in second quarter of 2011

Global Alumina Corporation (TSX: GLA.U) (the "Company" or "Global Alumina"), a corporation participating in a joint venture to develop an alumina refinery, mine and associated infrastructure in the bauxite-rich region of the Republic of Guinea (the "Project"), announced today its financial and operating results for the three and six month periods ended June 30, 2011. Second Quarter 2011 Financial Highlights


In the first six months of 2011 the joint venture partners contributed capital of $25.5 million towards the approved Project budget with the Company contributing its $8.5 million one-third share.

At June 30, 2011, Guinea Alumina Corporation, Ltd. (the joint venture company) had capitalized into construction in progress approximately $667.8 million, of which approximately $16.7 million relates to the second quarter 2011.

As at June 30, 2011, the Company had unrestricted cash of $7.6 million and escrowed cash totalling $26.1 million in its escrow account to fund future Project capital calls.

For the three and six months ended June 30, 2011, respectively, the Company reported a net loss of $1,107,619 million ($0.01 per share) and $2,199,116 ($0.01 per share), compared to a net loss of $684,234 ($0.01 per share) and $1,901,256 ($0.01 per share) for the same periods in 2010.

Interest income for the quarter was $21,081 versus $32,482 in the second quarter of 2010.




At current usage rates, Global Alumina's currently available funds will be sufficient to meet its one-third share of Project equity requirements and its corporate operating expense requirements through April 2012.
