High precision polishing and measuring machine maker Zeeko received a visit from local MP for North West Leicestershire, Andrew Bridgen, and has been nominated for the Made by Britain initiative, following the company's gaining of a Queen's Awards for Enterprise in the Innovation category earlier this year.
Zeeko, which has just celebrated its tenth anniversary, specialises in the manufacture of polishing machines that are used to make high precision optics, orthopaedic joints, semiconductor products and precision moulds.
The MP has nominated the Coalville-based company for Parliament's Associate All Party Manufacturing Group Made by Britain initiative, naming the company's product as the best example of manufacturing in his constituency.
Mr Bridgen said: "Zeeko has progressed from being a start-up company with innovative technology for polishing ultra-precision surfaces for telescope mirrors and other optical surfaces, to become a market leading company with a wide polishing and metrology product portfolio that competes impressively in a global market place.
"The company is an innovative, young and dynamic technology-based business with globally protected intellectual property extending to over 52 worldwide patents."
Business Secretary Vince Cable launched the Made by Britain initiative in July. He called on the UK's 650 MPs to nominate an example of manufacturing excellence from their constituency, taking his cue from the Great Exhibition of 1851, which showcased some of the most exciting technical innovations of the time. Six million people - a third of the entire UK population at the time - visited the exhibition that year.
"British industry remains among the very best for the quality and originality of what it makes," said Dr Cable. "We export goods to every corner of the world, from famous international brands to products which, while less well known, make a real difference to the lives of millions."
To date, 79 companies have been nominated – see list here
Subcontractor Qualiturn, machine tool maker Boxford, and measurement, additive manufacturing and medical engineering firm Renishaw are also nominated.
