A new labor dispute is facing Namdeb following the resolution of a month-long strike that cost Namibia’s state-run diamond producer $15.7 million in net profits.
AllAfrica.com reports that Namdeb is scheduled to meet with the Mineworkers Union on Namibia (MUN) next Tuesday to discuss 14 issues, most of which have to do with the workers’ dissatisfaction with Namdeb’s general manager and health and safety issues.
The recent strike ended on September 15 when MUN head John Ndeutepo and Namdeb Managing Director Inge Zaamwani-Kamwi signed a settlement. Both sides pledged to commit themselves to restoring good labor relations.
Namibia boasts the largest marine diamond resources in the world. Since the beginning of 2011, the country has seen revenue from diamond sales increase, reflecting rising prices in the global diamond market, although production was down.
From April to June 2011, Namibia produced 208,000 carats of rough diamonds – less than half of the total diamond production in the second quarter of 2010.
