Bowers Metrology has installed a twin-spindle, multi-axis Nakamura Tome WT150 MMY CNC turning centre to help it keep pace with international industry's growing demand for the company's products.
Founded in 1979 as the Bowers Internal Gauge Company, the company has earned a global reputation for its bore gauges and is now said to be acknowledged as the world's leading manufacturer of internal measuring devices.
"Having doubled our turnover since 2009 and consequently experienced capacity problems within our CNC machining section, a decision was made to investigate the available high yield machine tools that would help to alleviate our production bottle-neck," explains Bowers Metrology managing director, Graham Keefe. "Although we have enjoyed excellent levels of high quality component production from our existing Nakamura Tome turning centre, we looked at several alternative machine tools. Although, on witnessing a demonstration of Nakamura Tome's WT150 MMY, CNC turning centre, from Turning Technologies UK, we were quickly convinced about the merits of the machine and placed an order.
"Following a trouble-free installation and training period our new machine is now in full production and is making a significant contribution towards satisfying the growing demand for our bore gauges. In addition to the impressive volume of complex parts manufactured by our new machine tool, the quality of the parts produced by it meet the premium quality standards required by Bowers.
"Some of the components manufactured on our new Nakamura Tome are fundamental to the efficient operation of our high-precision bore gauges, such as our Ultima range. As Ultima gauges are capable of sub-micron measurement, the need for the highest levels of precision and quality manufacturing is essential."
