The Geodynamics Research Center at Japan’s Ehime University has developed the first perfectly spherical diamond in the world, the AsiaOne news site reports.
On Thursday, the university announced that it had successfully manufactured a lab-grown diamond into a sphere with a diameter of 7.5 millimeters. The perfectly round diamond weighs four carats.
According to the researchers, the technology used to manufacture a perfectly spherical synthetic diamond could have vast applications.
To date, no natural diamond has been cut into a perfect sphere.
