The Monaco Police have arrested three men who are believed to be members of an international gang of jewelry robbers known as the Pink Panther.
One of the suspects is a Serb who the police believe may be one of the most wanted members of the gang, Dragan Miki?. He has allegedly been a Pink Panther leader since his escape from prison in 2005.
Monaco Police picked up the tree suspects last week as they were leaving a casino. The police believe that the international jewelry gang was planning another robbery in the vicinity of the casino, which features many jewelry stores.
The gang first hit the headlines in the wake of the 1993 jewelry heist in London's Mayfair district, when they stole jewels worth half a million British pounds.
According to Interpol, the notorious jewelry gang has so far staged 120 robberies in 20 countries, raking in luxury jewelry worth an estimated GBP 150 million. Interpol claims there are as many as 200 Pink Panthers, "many of whom are believed to be Serbian and Montenegrin nationals with military experience."
Earlier this month, two Montenegrins, suspected Pink Panther members, were jailed by a French court on charges relating to forged papers. Montenegrin police, acting on an Interpol warrant, arrested Vladimir Leki?, another suspected Pink Panther, in the beginning of June.
